Year 3 home learning- how can you support learning at home

As your child embarks on their Year 3 journey, the transition to more structured and challenging learning can feel both exciting and a bit daunting. Supporting your child's education at home plays a crucial role in reinforcing what they learn in the classroom. Here are some key areas to focus on at home to support your child's academic growth.

Reading:

Reading is fundamental to all aspects of learning. Encourage your child to read daily by providing a variety of age-appropriate books that match their interests. You can also read together, taking turns reading aloud, which can help improve their reading fluency and comprehension. Discuss the stories you read to build critical thinking and foster a love for literature.

In KS2 your child is able to bring 2 books home from school – one book banded book and one sharing book (fiction or nonfiction). We encourage you to share these books with your children, ask them questions about what they have read and discuss stories with them. Please log any reading on Boomreader which will also count towards your child’s reading karate band.

Maths:

Learning and rehearsing basic maths at home is essential for building a strong foundation in numeracy. For Year 3 students, mastering these core skills not only boosts their confidence but also prepares them for more advanced concepts as they progress through school. Here are some crucial areas to focus on when supporting your child's maths learning at home.

  • Learning Basic Facts- Basic number facts are the building blocks of all mathematical learning. Practising how numbers combine to make 10, 20, and 100 is a great way to enhance your child's mental math abilities.
  • Doubling and Halving- Understanding how to double and halve numbers is another critical skill. These concepts are frequently used in various areas of maths, from fractions to multiplication.
  • Times Tables Mastery- By the time they leave Year 3, we hope that children are able to recall the multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5, 10, 3, 4, and 8 times tables with ease. Use catchy songs or rhymes to help your child remember the multiplication tables. This makes learning more enjoyable and memorable.

To keep your child motivated, try to make maths practise as engaging as possible. Use everyday situations, like shopping or cooking, to reinforce these concepts. For instance, ask your child to double a recipe’s ingredients or calculate the total cost of items in your shopping basket using their times tables.

Spellings:

Please see below a link to our spellings this term and common exception words. Spellings will be assessed on Friday’s but will be taught throughout the week. They will be taught through games and in their writing and it’s great to practise these at home whenever you get the opportunity too.
